KAHULUI/WAILUKU

 Kahului – Many visitors land at the airport in Kahului and then take off for Kihei or Lahaina, not taking the time to return to explore what the city has to offer which is a mistake. Kahului is where one-quarter of Maui’s population lives and is where you’ll find movie theaters, malls, restaurants, and the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. It has a deep-water port where Maui’s sugar and pineapples are shipped out and other commodities are shipped in. Watch Maui canoe races in the harbor. The Kanaha Beach County Park has good swimming and is a favorite of windsurfers. It’s the best place to learn sailboarding.
Wailuku – Wailuku has been Maui’s county seat since 1905. It earned its name which means “Water of Destruction” from a ferocious battle fought by Kamehameha I against Maui warrior in the ‘Iao Valley which is just outside of Wailuku. The slaughter was so intense that more than four miles of the ‘Iao Stream ran red with blood. Missionaries arrived in 1832 and founded a school for girls. After converting Queen Ka’ahumanu to Christianity, they built a church that was named after her. The original adobe church eroded in the rains, and a new church was built. The white church with green trim and a lofty spire is a dramatic landmark in Wailuku’s historic district. The Baldwin House Museum has many interesting objects from Maui’s colorful history and should not be missed by island visitors.
