MAKAWAO/KULA

 Makawao is the last real paniolo (Hawaiian for cowboy) town on Maui. Traveling to Makawao, you leave behind the lowland fields of sugar cane and pineapples to arrive at upland pastures bordered by tall forests. Portuguese immigrants who started raising cattle on the upland slopes settled the town. In the 1970’s, Makawao began to change. New merchants, artists, and alternative healing practitioners began to move into town. Now you can buy art glass, Oriental medicine, homemade baked goods, designer jeans, contemporary paintings, and more in the shopping area.
Kula is the place to go if you want wonderful views of the central valley, plus good restaurants and flower farms. On the slopes of Haleakala, Kula is Maui’s breadbasket. Farms around Kula grow Maui onions, lettuce, tomatoes, potatoes, asparagus, carrots, cauliflowers, and cabbage as well as cut flowers.
