PAIA/HAIKU
|
Pa’ia was the main gateway for sugar for East Maui with even a plantation railroad that functioned until about thirty years ago. Ethnic field workers settled here, living in segregated housing clusters along Baldwin Avenue. In the 1970’s and 1980’s, the town started to change because of an influx of new residents that included hippies and windsurfers. Colorful Pa’ia has a healthfood store, charming boutiques, crafts stores, Maui Hands art galleries, and good restaurants. It is also home to the Maui Country Club in Spreckelsville.
Ha’iku – If you take the Ha’iku Road off the Hana Highway, you reach the rural community of Ha’iku. Alexander & Baldwin grew their first 12 acres of sugar cane nearby, and the village once had both a sugar mill and a pineapple cannery. Now Ha’iku is the home of a mix of old-time locals, hippies-turned-farmers, business owners, and artists. Visitors come to Ha’iku to stay at the Bed and Breakfasts, view the beautiful scenery, or just enjoy one of the great cafes and restaurants
